Training and Experience

Dr Cameron graduated MB ChB in 2001 from The University of Glasgow Medical School. He voluntarily extended his undergraduate training by an extra 2 years, driven to develop specialist knowledge in Immunology (BSc with Honours 1998). During his undergraduate years he interned in the world renowned Thomas E Starzl Transplant Institute, Pittsburgh, USA.

Dr Cameron’s early career was spent in Glasgow where he was successful in entering a highly competitive medical training program in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. During this period he obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK, 2004), passing each stage successfully at the first attempt. It was these early years that Dr Cameron developed a passion for respiratory medicine and continued his hospital based training, thereafter moving to Edinburgh.

In 2007, Dr Cameron entered higher specialist training in Respiratory Medicine. Dr Cameron recognised his ambition for academic research and was appointed Clinical Research Fellow (2009) in the Asthma and COPD Research Unit of Professor Neil C Thomson, a world expert in airways disease. Dr Cameron submitted his PhD in 2013 and has published several papers in high impact medical journals and presented his work internationally.

In parallel with his research, Dr Cameron was one of the first candidates to sit the newly mandated Specialist Certificate in Respiratory Medicine (MRCP Respiratory Medicine, 2010), again passing this at the first attempt.

Following completion of his training, Dr Cameron was appointed as a Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine at Forth Valley Royal Hospital (2014). He regards it as a privilege to serve the people of the Forth Valley area. Having been appointed to consultancy, Dr Cameron was elevated to Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (FRCP Glasg).

Outside of clinical practice, Dr Cameron has been an examiner for the Royal Colleges at all levels of written and clinical examination. His research continued post-consultancy and Dr Cameron has been a Local Principal Investigator for several large multi-centre studies and more recently contributed to the COVID-19 pandemic response. This was though his local supervision of vaccine responses in healthcare workers. This was published in in The Lancet medical journal, a world leading journal in medicine. In recognition of his academic activities, Dr Cameron was appointed Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at The University of Glasgow.

Dr Cameron entered in to private practice in 2016, establishing a thriving clinic at King’s Park Hospital in Stirling and also at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital in Edinburgh. In parallel with his respiratory consultancy, Dr Cameron regularly delivers specialist assessments in allergy and allergic disease, providing advice, investigation and sometimes treatment with targeted monoclonal antibody therapy.

Unwilling to stand still, Dr Cameron has expanded his knowledge further by successfully completing a Certificate in Health Economics and Policy (2022) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Following this Dr Cameron completed and was awarded a Certificate in Healthcare Leadership (2023) from Stanford University, California.

Dr Cameron is delighted to offer his services in the voluntary sector, joining Asthma + Lung UK (2023). He was appointed to their Council of Healthcare Professionals, becoming Chair of Council.

With over two-decades of post-graduate experience, Dr Cameron provides consultations for respiratory problems, allergies and general medical issues.

Dr Cameron’s passion is lung health

Dr Cameron is highly skilled at chest-x-ray and chest CT interpretation.

Dr Cameron is accredited in chest ultrasound and regularly performs endoscopic examination of the lungs (airways). He is also trained in endobronchial ultrasound, an extended technique used to asses and biopsy lymph glands and tissue in the centre of the chest.

Dr Cameron is highly experienced in assessing immune function and the diagnosis and treatment of allergic asthma and allergies.

Since entering private practice, Dr Cameron has extended the scope of his practice to include assessments for food allergies. With background training in immunology, Dr Cameron has used technologies (monoclonal antibodies) for the treatment of severe hay fever. He has detailed knowledge of the underlying pathways in allergic disease provided by his studies in immunology. Never before was his previous training more relevant than when the new COVID vaccines were developed. Dr Cameron regularly assesses immune function and is trained in the diagnosis of immune-deficiencies.
